What is going on in The Mirror?

15 Sep 98. Well this will be short, but important... The UNC student newspaper is going to hell. In the past issues we have seen support for gun ownership, commentary pointing out that Klinton is the only person in the states who can get away with sex in the work place, (not to mention that he is wrong to be doing this, The Mirror, saying Klinton is wrong??), and assorted other "conservative" ideas. This sucks.... I think we need to get back to the days when The Mirror was a communist / liberal publication and proud of it. Since they have started up this year I haven't read anything that even comes close to the stupidity of the previous 2 years. I realize new people are at the helm now, but I hope this trend isn't going to continue. My God, next thing you know someone might even come out in favor of freedom......

Some comments on recent issues of The Mirror:

One student writes in ranting because Zachariah's removed the cash register and he can no longer purchase food like all the people on the meal plan. Having never eaten there I can't make any comments on this first hand, but I have to agree with him, it sounds pretty stupid. Are you telling me that I couldn't wonder over to Z's & buy some chow with my hard earned cash? Well, it's college, so they would do something stupid like this.....

In reference to Klinton the editor writes "Get him out of there. The faster the better." Pinch me, am I dreaming. What the hell is going on here. A college newspaper should be defending this man to the hilt, after all, Klinton does feel their pain......

A letter to the editor talking about relationships (boy / girl / romance type) containing things like: "To care for another more than one's self is an act of true selflessness." and "Consider the sacrifice God went through when he gave his one and only son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for out sins." This?? In The Mirror?? I mean seriously, this is a favorable mention of God.......

The Mirror did run an article about something that has almost become a "flap" here around UNC. Seems 5 guys living in a house near UNC put up a sign on their house that said "Free Friends Here". This was a play on the rush signs that the frats are putting up. See, apparently some brain child came to the conclusion that since you have to pay dues to be a member of a frat that you are in fact buying friends. Now, without getting to deep into the stupidity here, I'm going to debunk this on the surface level & be done with it. I have never been in a frat, but they all seem to have houses. They also tend to use water, electricity & have trash picked up. I'm pretty sure they don't get these for free. Let's not forget gifts from our communist government like property tax as well. So, the money to pay for these things has to come from someplace. Duh, how 'bout the people who live there? Not to mention the wild parties which I'm sure result in the odd bit of property destruction, so it makes perfect sense that one would pay dues. Besides frats are social organizations when you get right down to it, and you pay for membership in most all of those. In fact, the 5 guys offering free friends are paying dues also, it's called the rent. If they were willing to let me move in for free, maybe I'd buy their offer.

Lucky for me however, even though The Mirror is making a frightening turn to the "right" I still have the Greeley Tribune. A newspaper staffed by perhaps the stupidest people alive. The Trib recently made the transition from being an evening paper to being a morning paper, thus joining the rest of the world. They made a huge issue out of this. In fact they had little Q&A blurbs in the paper regarding the change. Further, these questions were so dumb that, as one caller to the "2 cents" phone line pointed out, they had to be made up because no one could be that stupid. Check this out, a quote from Chris Cobler, the editor.

"My biggest source of pride has been seeing people at the coffee shops and restaurants reading our papers (sic, papers??) in the morning. That just wasn't something you saw before conversion. It's exciting to know we'll be reaching more readers."

Yo, mo-ron. You never saw people reading the paper in the morning before because you didn't put out a morning paper. My God, if you put out the paper every other day, guess when you will see people reading it? Every other day. You aren't reaching more readers, the same people are reading it at different times of the day. Just because you change the time doesn't mean the masses are out there saying to each other "Gosh, the Trib is hitting the news stand 12 hours sooner, wow it must be really cool now. I think I'll get one and read it." Chris, as much as this will hurt, I have to tell you that your rag is still just bird cage liner.

And in a recent issue of the Trib:

Get this, the mayor of Greeley, in response to a 10% increase in juvenile crime since 1996, has come up with an Einstein idea. A 10% optional (what??) video rental and movie theatre tax, to apply to all movies or videos except those rated PG or G. Let's examine the stupidity:

First, this is the typical american mentality of materialism. Everything is linked to money. The way to respond to crimes, taxes. Yes people, money is the solution to everything. We can solve juvenile crime by taking more money away from people who are not committing juvenile crime. Makes perfect sense to me. No mention of morals involved, only cash.

Second notice the obvious solution which no one wants to talk about. How 'bout we take these kids and beat their asses until blood runs down their legs. Start the first time they screw up and continue each and every time after that. Stop coddling them. Stop making other people pay the price for their behavior. If the punishment doesn't affect them they are hardly going to change their behavior. If your dog craps on the carpet do you rub the cats nose in it?

How did I get here... Wasn't I talking about The Mirror?
