Essays on "real life"
Theatre & DramaAnyhow, since then I have revised it. I have posted the new version (27 MAY 99). I may make some more revisions and will post the new one as soon as I can. I think it is much better now, and best of all, the copyright violations are gone! I'm safe.
Read my Homeric Poem Mindspring. I wrote this in March 99 for as a project for a Western Civilization class. It was actually kind of fun to write structured poetry like this. I had intended to keep working on it & finish it, but I got lazy. Maybe one day. Plus, I really wasn't sure where I was going with the story. This is a case of making things up as I go along.
Also read my essay on Homeric poetry.
In my Intro to Theatre class we (the class members) wrote a play. We each wrote a scene & they involved a common theme(s). Here is my scene, entitled simply Us. Dan, the teacher then made me write, in 3 sentances, what does Us mean. So, if you can't figure it out, click here.
Well, it's not theatre - but it could be drama. I wrote some TV comercials for Bruce's Easy Rent in Farmington. Read the scripts. We filmed all of them, but only a few made it on the air. Politics & religion went into effect and Bruce was pressured to discontinue them.
Philosophy
"When our mind is conscious of something, we are that thing."
"There are people who cannot tolerate peace and quiet, who are afraid of facing themselves, so they turn on the television in order to be preoccupied with it for a whole evening. In contemporary culture, people rarely like to be with themselves, and the frequently seek forgetfulness - downtown at the theatre or other place of amusement. People rarely like to look deeply and compassionately at themselves. Young people in America watch television more than five hours per day, and they also have all sorts of electronic games to occupy them. Where will a culture in which people do not have a chance to face themselves or form real relationships with others lead us?"
-- Turning of the Television by Thich Nhat Hanh
"It is not difficult to avoid death, gentlemen of the jury, it is much more difficult to avoid wickedness, for it runs faster than death."
-- Socrates in The Apology by Plato
