Parting Words

Parting words are the hardest
One never knows what to say
Parting words are the longest
But much too short to stay
Parting words come so slowly
Their meaning is never certain
Parting words feel like the end
The closing of the curtain

When they are said what remains
Promises to be kept or to be broken
When they are done what is left
Only the feelings that were never spoken
When they are revealed, what are the options
We only think we have a choice
When they are over all we have
Is the sound of our own voice
